Tips for candidates when sitting a psychometric test

Psychometric assessments are the most accurate method available to predict job fit.

This is crucial as it ensures that the job is not only right for the candidate but that the candidate is right for the job.

The assessments may include several components:

  • Timed Aptitude Assessments: These may include questions related to verbal reasoning, numerical skills, and abstract reasoning involving shapes and patterns.
  • Personality Assessments: These untimed assessments delve into your preferences, likes, and dislikes to gauge your personality traits.
  • Values Assessments: Also untimed, these questions help determine what is important to you and whether your values align with those of the potential employer.

We ensure that any personal details remain confidential and are only shared with those directly involved in the hiring process.

To maximise the accuracy of the assessments:

  • Ensure a stable internet connection.
  • Find a quiet, distraction-free environment, especially for timed assessments.
  • Remember that once the assessment is complete, the organisation will be automatically notified

Setting clear expectations for candidates doing psychometric tests

If you are watching this video, it’s because you’ve been asked to undertake psychometric assessment.

Many millions of people across the world have undertaken psych assessments in job application processes in the past, and there are good reasons for this.

Psych assessment is the most accurate method available to predict whether somebody is likely to fit into a job, but also very importantly whether the job is likely to satisfy them.

So it’s good for both parties: good for the employer, and good for you.

Just a couple of things about the process.

The importance of ethical psychometric testing

Firstly, ethics.

We undertake all of our work in accordance with the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics.

Your details will be treated absolutely confidentially.

We also ask our clients to make sure that your details go to nobody apart from the people who are involved directly in the recruitment process.

The types of assessments

Just a few words about what the assessments actually are.

We have multiple assessments which are used for different jobs, but they typically combine some of these components.

Firstly, you may or may not be asked to undertake timed aptitude assessments.

And the timed aptitude assessments run between 15 and 25 minutes.

And they have a bunch of questions which are to do with words, numbers, or a thing called abstract reasoning, which is about shapes and how they progress.

Those are timed.

Secondly, you may well be asked to undertake personality assessment, which will ask you a range of questions about things that you like and things that you don’t like, and they are untimed.

You can take as much time as you want to complete those.

And you may well be also asked questions about values, things that are important to you, and this is also an untimed set of assessments.

How to ensure your results are accurate

Things that you should be aware of.

One, it’s important that you have a stable internet connection and you’re in a distraction-free environment.

So find a place where you won’t be interrupted.

This is particularly important for these timed assessments because if you lose time during the process, that will change the results.

What next?

Also, once you’ve completed the assessments, the organisation gets notified automatically.

And they will be in touch with you according to the timeframes.

It’s important to understand that SACS is not aware of the progress of your application.
