Why leaders are central to the success of workforce planning

The leaders of an organisation play a pivotal role in the success or failure of any workforce planning exercise.

And that role is to ensure that everyone in the organisation, at every level, is engaged and feeling positive about the planning process.

Leaders need to exhibit four behaviours to maximise engagement – optimism and positivity, staff empowerment, supportive leadership and creation of a learning environment.

There are also three ways to approach a workforce planning process – top-down, consultative and facilitative – and research shows that facilitative leadership is the most successful by far.
